December issue – After 5

After 5, an Eden Prairie based vocal jazz ensemble will release a new holiday CD “Amid the Winter Snow” in November.

After 5, an 11 voice vocal ensemble backed by a swingin’ 4-piece rhythm section of piano, standup bass, guitar and drums, is a favorite of the jazz and swing enthusiasts in the area. “Amid the Winter Snow” features seasonal songs such as Santa Baby, I’ve Got My Love To Keep Me Warm, Snowfall and A Child is Born.

After 5 will be performing at the Eden Prairie Dunn Brother’s on Saturday, December 20th from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Dunn Brothers is located at 8107 Eden Prairie Road, Eden Prairie phone: 952/934-0145.

After 5, founded in 1992, is aptly named to reflect the need of its musicians to pursue their love of swing and jazz after day jobs. The members bring a variety of musical backgrounds and abilities to the ensemble including musical arrangers and directors, music instructors, music therapists and musical theater, as well as musical backgrounds from rock to classical.

After 5 is supported in part by fund from the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council through a grant that brings entertainment to social service organizations such as senior living facilities or women’s shelters. This past month After 5 performed at Altera Clare Bridge Memory Care in Eden Prairie as well as at Summit Place Senior Campus in Eden Prairie.

After 5 has performed for music classes at many of the local schools teaching the history and sounds of jazz, gospel, blues, swing and African music.

After 5 performs 30-40 times per year around the metro area. Past public performances include the Minneapolis Women’s Club, Staring Lake Park, Lake Harriet Bandshell, the Mall of America, the Minnesota History Center, the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum, Como Park Bandshell, Wildfire Restaurant as well as singing the National Anthem for the Timberwolves, Twins, Lynx and St. Paul Saints.

To culminate ten years of performing, After 5 performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City in April 2003.

After 5 can be seen this holiday season at St. Paul’s Landmark Center on Saturday December 6 from 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. for the annual Old Fashioned Holiday Bazaar (Landmark Center 75 West 5th St. St Paul, cost $2.00) at Crossview Lutheran Church in Edina on Sunday, December 14, 7:00 p.m. (6645 McCauley Trail, Edina, free) and for their holiday CD release “Amid the Winter Snow” on December 20th from 8:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at Dunn Brothers Coffee (8107 Eden Prairie Road, Eden Prairie phone: 952/934-0145, free.)
